Parking Lots Can Be Hazardous
Parking lots can be hazardous -
parking lots are typically more like wastelands, both literally and metaphorically. Our parking lot is made of asphalt and concrete, it takes up a large amount of space on our land, but it also stores chemicals known to be harmful to our health.
One of the chemicals found in asphalt sealant is polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which can lead to skin problems and cancer. A study has proven that workers who are exposed to the chemicals that are used to make asphalt sealant oil suffer from problems such as headaches, fatigue, dizziness and skin irritation.
Another harmful chemical that is found in concrete is crystalline silica. It has been known to cause a lung disease called silicosis. Our parking lot was sealed with this chemical as well as many other chemicals by an outside company. If a person breathes in enough of these chemicals, it can cause a deadly disease called lung cancer.
