Why Fear To Sell .. How You Can Overcome It” (Part I)
Do you ever wonder why some people are hesitant to sell? Is it the fear of letting go of control? The concern of not being able to do it again? And what can we do when we have this fear and they try to persuade us that we’re doing something wrong?
In order to make a living, many people need to sell their possessions. This may be because they need money for expenses or want a new house, car, or other material goods. But there is an underlying reason that many sellers feel this way: There is an unknown factor that comes with selling. This unknown factor is what we call fear.
We all have different reasons for selling. Some people sell because they don’t want to keep an item anymore. Others are trying to make more money or move up in an organization. But the number one reason for selling is often fear . Fear comes along with thinking, I will never be able to do this again. They will forget what I did and will feel that they are foolish and will not be able to be successful again.
Fear is real. Everyone feels it, especially when selling. The fear that you’ll never make that much money or receive the recognition you want again can be extremely powerful. We are human and have feelings, and feelings are a part of being human. But the more we learn how to manage our fears the better we can become at what we do.
How do we control our fears? I will share with you my “secret formula” that I use when I need to overcome a fear while selling: remember, believe, affirm and act (RBA) .
Step 1 : Remember . When dealing with a fear of selling or something like it, the first thing we need to do is remember. Remember where you started from, what you’ve accomplished, and the fun times. Remember why you chose to be in business for yourself.
Step 2: Believe . Once we’ve remembered what we are good at and why we are doing this, it is time to believe in ourself. If someone else were to do what you do, would they be successful? Do you know of people who have done the same thing as you? If so, remember how they got started and how they are doing now. Believe that they did it too and they can show you how to succeed.
Step 3: Affirm . After we’ve had the belief that we can do this, affirm it. Say to yourself, “I can do this. I believe that I can” and then proceed to do it. You have no choice but to take the first step.
Step 4: Act . After you have done this, continue to move forward for another two days. Most people are afraid of what they don’t know or understand, but we need to overcome that fear in order to be successful at something new. This gives us time to think about what we’ve done and how we’re doing with it. Then when the time comes again, we won’t be afraid of taking the step forward because we’ve already done so many times before this .
I am one who does not sell. Rather I buy and then resell. So I have no fear when it comes to this. I have also made some profit from it as well so there is a little reward also at the end of the day. The question is, how do we get started? How can we overcome those fears that we have with selling? The answer for me is, start young (even before you are old enough) and learn as much as you can about selling every chance you get.
This is what I did as a child. I was already a very popular babysitter at a young age. As the years past by, so did my popularity with groups of kids from all different ages. They would come to me so that they could play and have fun together for their parties or special events that they would be attending. I was known as the “party planner” who was always on the lookout for children and their parents just to have them in my presence.
Even now, at this young age I can still play with children without people telling me that it isn’t allowed to do so because it is not a good thing to do. I know that the best way to overcome our fears is to remember what we are good at, what we like to do, and why we are doing it. We have to also affirm it because it makes belief in ourselves more possible.
Then when the time comes and you need to act, act. Do not let fear keep you from doing so. You will feel better about yourself when you release this thing that was holding you back from making money from something that you’re good at. So again I say, remember, believe and act!
