Payroll Oregon, Unique Aspects of Oregon Payroll Law and Practice
As the saying goes, "Knowledge is power". In this case, it's not just a phrase but something of a literal truth. The more knowledge you have on payroll law and practice in Oregon in particular, the better off you will be. That being said, let us take some time to introduce you to some aspects of Oregon payroll law that are unique to sorts and should be considered when managing your company's payroll.
The first thing we'll mention is that in Oregon wages are subject to an employers' withholding tax (or Oregon income tax). This means that from the moment your employees are hired until the end of their employment with your company, they will have their wages automatically withheld for taxation purposes. This also means that in many cases, you won't have to do anything whatsoever.
The other primary unique aspect of Oregon law is that it is the only state in which you are not obligated to pay a payroll tax to the state. While federal law requires employers to pay both the employer (6.2%) and employee (1.45%) side of the Social Security tax into the system, Oregon law only requires employers to pay their employees' share of Social Security taxes into the system and does not require employers to pay a payroll tax.
Addressing all other aspects of payroll must also be considered when talking about Oregon's unique laws and practices regarding payroll management. While not unique to Oregon, it is worth noting that Oregon is one of a handful of states that allow employees to pursue legal action against their employers. Without getting into the particulars or what constitutes a "successful" lawsuit, it is important to remember that there are always risks involved with employment, especially when an employee feels like they've been wronged by the company and might turn to legal action.
In the end, though, for the most part--Oregon's payroll laws are pretty straightforward and easy to manage. Just know that there are a few things you should be aware of before you begin managing payroll in Oregon.
