Restaurant Merchant Accounts

 Restaurant Merchant Accounts

If you are looking for a merchant account for your restaurant, then here are a few things you need to know. Types of accounts available to restaurants include "regular" and "merchant-managed". Merchant accounts can be set up with one or two cards.

A regular account is simpler and cheaper. You will be limited in the types of transactions that you can use, but this type of account will work well if your business has fewer than four employees. A merchant-managed account offers more flexibility and control over what transactions are processed, but there is the cost associated with the higher risk. If you have an established business that has been around for more than six months, then this type of account would be best for your restaurant needs.

Most types of restaurants can get merchant accounts. The variety of restaurants that accept credit cards varies from the small mom-and-pop restaurant to the large chain restaurant. If your restaurant serves alcohol, then you will need a class A liquor license. This will be required by your processor and is usually not a problem.

Your restaurant customers may decline to pay with a credit card for any number of reasons, including their concern about high credit card fees and general distrust of using plastic for payment. What this means is that you have to have a backup system in place in order to deal with those payments that are not charged by credit card. In order to make up for any loss, you must have a bank account set up for receiving refunds or deposits.

If a customer refuses to pay with a credit card but insists on paying by cash, then you may not be able to get their payment. You do not want to lose that money because the restaurant did not receive it and it is not in your bank account.

When choosing merchants accounts for your restaurant, you should make sure that the processor allows you to receive payments from your bank account. Banks sometimes charge fees for accepting credit cards but do not pay much attention to the merchant's needs. When choosing a merchant account, you want to make sure that the processor will be able to refund or deposit payments from your bank account.

Depending on what type of restaurant you are running, your processor may offer additional services. Some processors offer management programs in which they handle all of the day-to-day operations of your restaurant. This means that you can focus on running your business and not worrying about poor customer service or how to manage employee payroll.

Another service that some processors offer is a payment guarantee program. You pay a small fee for this service and then they will guarantee that you will receive all of the credit card payment for up to 80% of the total bill. This is a good option if you need to guarantee payment for your customers.

The Secrets of Success: Small Businesses That Work by Peter Sims, published by McMillan on February 28, 2012.  This book covers the same topics as the above book, however it comes from a different perspective.  Instead of focusing on the science behind running a business, this book covers the "Secrets" that successful small businesses have in common and how you can incorporate those things into your business.  From processes and procedures to hiring staff and building a culture, Sims covers all of the aspects that make up your small business.  He also goes into detail about how to evaluate your own company if you are unsure of what it is that sets your company apart from others in its industry.

The 12 Success Secrets of Small Business by Peter Sims, published by McGraw Hill on January 2011.  This book covers the same topics as the above two books, however it is written from a different perspective.  Sims explores how great businesses are run and how you can use that knowledge to your advantage.  This book is made up of 12 chapters and each chapter goes into detail about a specific topic that small businesses have in common.  From a customer-centric focus to products and services, Sims goes into detail about all of the aspects that make a business successful.

The Small Business Idea by Peter Sims, published by McGraw Hill on January 2010.  This book is another out of the four books by Sims that was released in 2010 and it focuses on what makes a great small business idea and how to build one.  He covers topics like whether you should go into business or not as well as what the most common pitfalls are for beginning entrepreneurs.  Sims offers advice on making sure you have a great idea before you begin creating your product or service and then going through the creation process step by step.

The Little Big Things: 163 Ways to Pursue Excellence at Work by Peter Sims, published by McGraw Hill on January 2009.  This book is about pursuing excellence at work from inside of your company rather than from without.

Conclusion: I am not a small business owner but I have friends that are and this book is helping me understand what they are doing.  The book is broken down into chapters explaining 163 things that you should do to begin a career that will be successful while being an entrepreneur.   He talks about the importance of teamwork and how it is often missed by companies that don't change long enough to enable their employees to grow as individuals in the organization, which he thinks people need in order to be successful.  Overall it was an interesting read and although I won't be turning into an entrepreneur just yet, I will be keeping this book around so that I can refer back to it if the time comes when I choose to take the leap myself.
