A Little Smile Goes A Long Way!
"A little smile goes a long way," as the saying goes - and for good reason! Giving out a kind, warm smile is not only good for your health, but also for the people around you. Think of it this way: no matter what kind of day you're having, someone else's day will be made better by a shared moment of kindness. It may seem like nothing in the grand scheme of things, but when more and more people adopt this mindset and continue to spread love in their communities, we'll be far closer to ending all that is bad in this world. Let's start now!
Here are five moments where giving out that extra sunshine can make an enormous difference:
1. At a funeral
When someone passes away, the loss is sometimes overwhelming to those closest to them. When the loved one finally lets go and goes to the great beyond, it's important for those left behind to know that he or she wasn't forgotten when it comes to showing love and respect. Gifts of flowers, cards, food, and music can be one way of paying respects and sending off your friend on their journey with kind thoughts. Even though you may not be able to attend the funeral service with him or her in person, you can send a card or note following his or her passing.
2. At a hospital
When a loved one is in the hospital, it's often a time when people are limited to what they can do. While most hospitals don't allow visitors during the patient's stay, those who aren't able to visit often send gifts. Flowers, cards, and snacks are always appreciated and seen as a sign of support during this difficult time. If you don't have the time or resources to bring your loved one a present or card, you can write him or her a note - there's no better way to let your friend know that you're thinking of them!
3. When giving to charity
When someone gives money to a charity, it shows that they're willing to give back. And we all know how much charities value their donations. When you donate money directly to a cause, you're also showing that you care and want to help. It's an easy way to show love for those in need and support what your community does for the betterment of everyone. You can also go beyond just donating money - volunteering at a drop-in centre or helping out inside the kitchen is a great way of showing your support while getting involved with a group running the organization!
4. When voting
While it may not seem like a big deal, voting is a huge act of love that affects all of us in this country. People spent countless days finding out who they wanted to see on the ballot and bringing their voices to the polls to make sure their candidate won. And once the elections are over, we still have our MPs and MLAs to represent us at a higher level. Voting is what makes our government better, along with all the good it does for the country and its citizens. By casting your ballot, you're saying that you care about what happens around you and believe in those leading this nation - there's no way you can't show love in such an action!
5. When being kind to strangers
When you pass a stranger on the street, there's no telling what that person is going through or what they're thinking about. But no matter how you feel about someone in that moment, doing something nice can make all the difference. For example, if someone drops something on the ground while walking past you, you could offer to help pick up their belongings and say "here!" It may just be a simple gesture of kindness - but it can go farther than you think. The next time you're on the street and see someone looking down, smile and ask if they're OK. The smallest act of kindness can go a long way!
