What is Spirituality ?
-The meaning of spirituality
Spirituality is a philosophy derived from our experiences in life. It is the ability to perceive the unknown through the power of our minds, bodies, and emotions. It is based on instinct rather than facts to derive truth from things we don't fully understand. For example, if you meditate for long enough and find that you are able to clearly see spirits or entities that have passed on, then it would be safe to say that this experience was spiritual as opposed to scientific. Spirituality takes many different forms and can be scientific, spiritual, religious or philosophical in nature.
How does Spirituality fit into our lives?
It is common for people to claim that the main phenomena are spiritual, when in reality it should be marked as an experience that one has had. Whether or not it is labeled as spiritual, the idea of otherworldly entities or spiritual phenomenon being real is what most people believe in. People tend to have a deep sense of spirituality within themselves that they recognize without even knowing and in turn makes them seek out teachings, books, or information to understand. Our need for spirituality is greater than we realize, which is why there exists a huge market for spiritual books that are sold. Many people do not understand the difference between spirituality, religion, and philosophy. It can be difficult to tell what is what in many religions, but it's even more difficult when it comes to spirituality because all three exist.
What makes a specific experience spiritual?
A spiritual experience should be one of many if not the most significant event in one's life. It should change you in some way or give you an insight into the world that you did not have before. This insight may be true or it may not be valid; everyone should decide for themselves whether they believe this event was spiritual or not. It should be something that takes away the need for religion or philosophy.
What's the difference between spirituality, religion, and philosophy?
Religion is a belief in a higher power that creates and maintains the universe. It can take many forms but all religions believe in a higher power. God, Buddha, Allah all are names for the same idea. Spirituality is, like religion, a belief in a higher power or power outside of one's self (like god). It could also go by many other names such as god consciousness, divine energy etc., but generally it refers to knowledge gained from spiritual means. It is defined as a lifestyle based on meditation and contemplation . The typical spiritual lifestyle has three parts: Awareness , Understanding , and Action .
Philosophy is the branch of knowledge that deals with the fundamental questions of existence, including the most basic and general questions of what it means to be, what we can know, how things are and how they came to be. It is a study that may or may not include religion.
What makes an experience spiritual then?
In order for something to be considered spiritual, it should deeply impact your daily life in some way. You should feel a sense of peace or enlightenment with yourself afterwards. Your life could drastically change if this event happened for real; The event itself has to have meaning for you in the first place.
Can anything be considered spiritual?
Anything can be considered spiritual, but it depends on the person. Some people who claim to have had experiences with dead relatives or the dead themselves could just be having crazy dreams due to the death of a loved one. While others may be experiencing something completely different, such as a divine being disguised as a human being.
What makes spirituality different from religion and philosophy?
Spirituality is not necessarily related to all three of these things in any way. It is, however, related to religion because of all three A belief in a higher power or power outside of oneself and an understanding of spiritual things through inward awareness and meditation . Spirituality is not necessarily related to all three of these things in any way. It is, however, related to religion because of all three these things being based off of spiritual consciousness in one way or another. If a person believes in a higher power, they will most likely take that to be God. If a person practices meditation in order to understand spiritual things, then they will most likely feel enlightened after a certain period of time. Which means that if someone believes that they are enlightened when meditating and they do not practice meditation (or even know what it is), then they are not actually enlightened and are merely having some sort of hallucination . If someone feels deep peace or has some sort of powerful feeling after a spiritual experience, then it's likely that they have experienced something real. Spirituality is different from religion and philosophy because spirituality involves one's own consciousness, consciousness of other consciousness , and an understanding based on the experience.
Conclusion
I do not believe in spirituality. I feel that religion and philosophy are better alternatives to spirituality, although they may not be real. I think that many people seek spirituality because they are searching for something other than the world we live in. They believe that there is something more to the universe than we can see with our eyes and feel with our emotions. I have a deep love for beautiful music and poetry, as it inspires me to write poetry as well; this is a spiritual thing to me, but it has nothing to do with religion or philosophy.
