Improve Your Concentration – A More Focused You Is A More Successful You
It is said that a human being’s natural attention span is less than 8 seconds. And with the advent of technology, our attention span has become even more limited. With continuous distractions like sound, light and social media notifications, it’s hard to keep your focus on any one task for more than a few minutes at a time. At work, this could make you appear to be lazy or disinterested and the worst part is that these distractions can lead to mistakes and missed opportunities in your work or studies.
In this post I will provide 5 helpful tips on how you can improve your concentration so that you are able to do everything with greater effectiveness and efficiency!
1. Start with the end in mind
It’s important to have a goal, something you are aiming for before attempting to achieve anything. If you know what you want to achieve, it will be much easier for your brain to concentrate on that task. For example, if you need to write an essay then it’s a good idea to have a specific topic in mind and start with that instead of just aimlessly writing down any and all thoughts that come into your head. This will help your brain focus on the topic and after a while of this state of concentration, your writing will become more clear, concise and effective as opposed to just mindless ramblings.
2. Get out of your comfort zone
This may seem counter-intuitive as most people try to stay in their comfort zone, but it is very important if you really want to improve your concentration and focus. Being able to concentrate for long periods of time is the key to being successful in any field. Therefore you need a certain level of comfort with the task or situation that you are focusing on in order for you to concentrate well. The more comfortable you become with a thing, the more effective your concentration will be when dealing with it. To achieve this, keep challenging yourself to do new things – progressively make them harder as you improve and get used to them – so that it becomes easier for your brain and body to remain focused on them.
3. Get moving
By keeping your body in motion, you are increasing your heart rate and therefore increasing blood flow to your brain. Having a sufficient supply of oxygenated blood flowing through your brain allows for better concentration and focus on whatever task you are doing. Furthermore, getting up and moving will also help you to feel emotionally refreshed as opposed to being trapped in a computer chair all day long. So it’s a good idea to get up every now and then and do a short workout, stretch or walk around just to clear your mind!
4. Find the right environment
This is another tip that many people could benefit from. There are many elements to consider when deciding on where you want to be focused in order to achieve your goal and it is important to consider all these elements before you decide on a specific location. Some of the most important factors in this regard include: noise, light, air flow, temperature and humidity. In addition, it’s important to look into your own needs as well when choosing an environment – for example if you have music playing constantly in the background then it could override all efforts at concentration and focus.
5. Create a distraction free zone
While some people may find it is advantageous to have distractions around them in order for them to remain focused, others may find that this is actually detrimental to their concentration and focus. This is because the confusion of too many distractions can lead the brain to get “over-stressed” and therefore not be able to deal with those tasks at hand properly. It’s important, therefore, that you build a distraction free zone so that you can concentrate on your work or studies without being distracted by external factors such as music or pre-recorded television shows which are constantly playing in the background.
With these thoughts in mind, I hope you will find some of the suggestions useful and beneficial for your own personal endeavors.
