5 Keys to Success

5 Keys to Success

The world is competitive and unforgiving--every day there are more and more people vying for fewer opportunities to meet their needs. It can be hard to stand out from the crowd, but it's not impossible. Follow these five keys to success, and you'll be well on your way to that sought-after job or promotion.

1. Be well-rounded.

A well-rounded applicant is much more likely to impress the employer than one who is specialized in just one area. This key includes having knowledge in areas that are clearly job related, like your CV's objective, educational achievements and experience. If a job requires a particular skill that you don't have, you can still put your best foot forward by demonstrating your interest in acquiring it.

2. Be honest!

It's OK to admit that you have to study for a test in order to ace it or know how to do something that the company doesn't require of its applicants (known as soft skills). You can still be successful if you're honest about your skills and work hard to improve on the ones that need work as well as develop your unique talents.

3. Do it yourself.

Every day, you have many chances to stand out from the crowd by doing things yourself instead of waiting for someone else to do it for you. Getting a head start on a project before anyone assigns it to you is an excellent example of this. Learning how to manage your time wisely is another--students are always really impressed when I tell them I make flash cards for my classes and study through them before class starts so I get the most out of class time.

4. Be personable.

A lot of people are put off by people who are cold and unresponsive, but it's a must in today's competitive business world. Being friendly and approachable gives you an edge that helps you get noticed by employers as easily as possible. You don't want to be intimidating or come off as too aggressive--you want to exude confidence without seeming like a jerk or being overbearing. Asking colleagues or friends how they're doing can also help break the ice and make you seem more like a human being instead of just some faceless number on their schedule.

5. Be professional.

Especially in the workplace, there is a certain level of professionalism that is expected. This includes dressing appropriately and showing up to work on time. These are things that a lot of people tend to get wrong but can easily fix. You don't want to seem like you're wasting someone's time or not worth their attention because you're late or not paying attention to your dress code.

These keys can be applied in pretty much any job scenario whether you need a promotion, are about to graduate and are looking for a job, or are just starting out and want to set yourself apart from the rest of the crowd in your field.
