"But how does this help me learn Spanish?" you may ask? Let's first look at what the link-word technique is and then I'll show you how I used this technique to memorize about a whopping 1,000 Spanish words! The link-word method is actually a very simple way to memorize new vocabulary words in any language using associations and repetition. This method can be used by anyone with any level of Spanish knowledge since it isn't focused on understanding grammar, verbs conjugations, or anything else other than memorizing vocabulary words. Let's get started! The first step in the process is to write a list of 10 new words that you want to learn. You can get these words from a textbook or use sentences you encounter during your daily life as prompts for your learning. For example, for my list I could have chosen the following words:Let's say that I'm trying to memorize the word "aprender" which means "to learn". My first step is to make an association with that word and something I find meaningful in my life. So let's say I decide to associate "aprender" with the English word "to learn". To do that, instead of trying to think of a Spanish translation of the word "to learn", I just think of a link-word that sounds similar to the English word. In this case, the link-word is "aprender". This segues into how the link-word method works since we don't have to know or understand Spanish words or grammar. We only need to know how to replace each letter in the Spanish words with a link-word beginning with those letters. So for example, I can make up the link-word "aprender" from the Spanish word "aprender" by replacing each vowel with a different link-word. This results in:This is the point where you write down these link-words in sequence on a piece of paper or document. Your list of links should make sense to you. For example, if your Spanish word begins with a B, C, or some other letter then you only make one link-word for that letter and not two separate ones such as "bicicleta" and "bicycle".
