New business magazine- India’s complete franchise business guide

In a day and age when businesses are turning to franchise models in increasing numbers, India is opening up a new universe for those who wish to explore the opportunities in franchising. With the power of online information, one can find many franchisors that offer business-to-business markets across a number of industries. The key is finding good franchise resources that give you a competitive edge in your exploration into this exciting market.

In our article, we have compiled some of the best sources that will provide you with all the relevant information on India’s current franchising scene and what makes it so attractive for both investors and entrepreneurs around the world.

Our sources include:

Government initiatives and policies through the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) and the Overseas Franchise Association of India (OFAI), in association with the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) - to promote development of franchising in India. These include branding opportunities, business start- up support, tax incentives, trade promotion, ease of doing business etc.

India’s segmented franchising industry is worth more than $10bn, with the strongest showing in multi-brand retail and hospitality operations, according to the research firm IBISWorld in its latest report on the industry published this month. IBISWorld classifies franchising into four distinct services: low-cost home services, business/professional services, casual dining and healthcare.

According to the report, the fast-expanding $4.2bn multi-brand retail segment is India’s largest franchising sector, followed by $3.3bn in business and professional services such as accountancy and financial planning.

The two fastest growing industries are low cost garments ($860m) and high quality casual dining (about $475m). Franchises are spread across 124 towns across the country with three or more franchises of the same brand operating in five or fewer sectors, according to IBISWorld’s director of research John Lederer.

The country’s biggest franchise players include global giants, such as McDonalds, Subway and Pizza Express.

The sector already generates about $1.6bn per year in revenues for franchisees.
"In the near future, we expect explosive growth in India's multi-brand retail market and increasing demand for both domestic and international brands," says IBISWorld analyst Avinash Kumar.
"The Indian economy has seen significant growth in recent years with strength in exports, and this growth is set to continue over the next few years. The Indian economy also has a young population that, as they become more affluent, will spend money on modern conveniences."
"India’s economy is growing and it is becoming an increasingly attractive market for businesses to expand into. Franchising is one of the most profitable ways to do this and there are many opportunities now available in India."

In addition to its domestic franchising operations, the country is also a location of choice for international franchisors seeking to enter new markets such as Russia, China and Korea.
