Before I start: I'm going to assume that this post was written by somebody who's never had any experience writing resumes before. So, when talking about "writing" your resume, I'm going to assume that you are writing your first resume.
I found the article pretty odd. The advice was all over the place. Early on in the post they tell you to download a sample resume template and then go on to talk about how terrible sample resumes are, and how they won't help you get a job.
The article begins with some advice on what type of font to use for your resume. If you're not a designer, this is not something you want to worry about, because it's doesn't matter what type of font is used in your resume.
Next, they start talking about using a blank template. This actually makes a lot of sense; it is much easier to write your resume in a blank template instead of Word or whatever you are using to write it that way. The site they recommend, Resumetemplates.org, has some pretty nice looking templates.
However, then the article mentions that you can choose between different professional designs or individualize your resume with headers and footers! Both of these design elements have little impact on your chances of getting hired. If you can't choose between a generic design or one with header and footers then you should probably look for another job because nobody wants to hire somebody who can't make up their mind.
Finally, after going over all of the design stuff, they tell you that a resume must be "professional" looking. I don't know what this has to do with getting a job, and I doubt anybody else will either. A professional looking resume is pretty subjective; it's up to you how well your resume matches some vague idea of what "professional" looks like.
How can a blank resume template be so terrible?
A blank resume template means that it is not filled out with your own information. It also means that there are no headers or footers on the template, and no lables in the margins, as if not doing anything is better than doing something wrong or inefficient.
Knowing what headers and footers to use does not help you get a job. You know to put your name, address and contact information in the header section, but it really doesn't matter what kind of name you use here. Do you want a name with strange characters? A name that could be totally different from your job title? Body text goes on the first page, which is fine. However, don't put anything in the footer - I can't imagine why anybody would care at all if a resume has footnotes in it.
It is true that doing something wrong can hurt your chances of getting hired. It's also true that just about anything will hurt your chances if it isn't done properly and well. However, you can tell whether or not you're doing something wrong by looking at the results of any test that your employer may ask you to take. If the test seems unfair or is not representative of anything else that you do on a daily basis, it's probably not going to be helpful for finding a job. It's possible that these tests just aren't worth the time and money to give them to anybody.
Is your resume professional looking?
If your resume looks like it was made by somebody who has never been a professional graphic designer before, then yes, "professional" means something different than what I'm defining here as "professional". However, if your resume was made by somebody with a few years of experience in graphic design, then I think it is professional looking.
Since you're talking about making your first resume, I'm going to assume that you're not a professional graphic designer and that you don't have much experience writing anything professional looking. However, if you've written things other than resumes before, then your experience will make your resume look more professional compared to somebody with no experience at all.
What do you need to know about writing a resume?
You don't need to be a graphic designer to write a good resume. You also don't have to be an English major or anything like that. Even though it may seem that way, having a certain amount of education does not translate into how good your resume is going to look and what kind of words you're going to use. However, there are some general principles and skills that are helpful in writing resumes:
Now the word "professional" is used here in way that I don't think it was intended. By professional, I mean that the content of your resume is going to matter more than the way you decided to lay it out. Just like in a professional versus non-professional situation, one is considered better or worse than another based on how they perform their duties within the context of their job description. If you're good at what you do, people are going to want to hire you.
What your resume looks like does not matter as much as whether or not you can do the job that you're applying for. However, there is some pretty good advice in this post about making sure that your resume looks good and doesn't sound stupid in any way.
Conclusion
In the end, it's up to you to decide whether or not you should make your own resume. There is nothing wrong with it, but also nothing right about it. If you choose to do it on your own, do not use a generic template; instead, go out and find a free template that has lables in the margins so that you can write your resume on that instead of Microsoft Word. It won't take you long at all to fill out these templates if they are formatted correctly, and they will look nice and professional while doing the job just as well as anything else would.
