Steel Containers Make Excellent Containers (And Much Else)

In a testament to the versatility of steel containers, you can find steel shipping container homes, restaurants, and even a zoo. This makes it easy for you to make the decision to invest in steel container buildings if you want to make your home or business more eco-friendly.

#4 Steel Container Homes
Steel containers are also used for building apartments and homes. For example, a company called Wide Beam Homes has built around 30 of these small structures in 13 states. These steel container structures often have solar panels on their roofs or balconies that generate electricity.

#5 Steel Buildings For Restaurants
Another use for steel containers is as buildings for restaurants. For example, this restaurant in California is made out of steel containers. The restaurant itself seats about 45 people and the containers are joined together with the help of special beams.

#6 Zoo In A Shipping Container Home
One of the most famous steel container zoos is in Cleveland, Ohio. This zoo was first opened in 1989 and has been one of the top attractions ever since then. The zoo has over 260 animals that live in these metal homes. On average, each home costs $30,000 to build and can hold up to 50 animals at a time plus their keepers.

These homes are easy to build and move and can be constructed in a matter of days. If the home isn’t being moved, contractors will weld steel beams onto the tops of the containers to make sure that they can support the weight of snow, wind, rain and other elements.

#7 Steel Shipping Container Stores And Offices
If you want to open your own business or store, you may be able to save money by looking into shipping container buildings. For example, Starbucks has used shipping containers as stores in California and Texas. UPS also uses these containers for their distribution facilities. They use around 90,000 of these units each year in their operations.

#8 Steel Shipping Containers Make Great Offices
Offices can also be built from the steel shipping containers. These offices can be equipped with desks, chairs and other supplies to create a work space. These units are small and mobile so they can be moved around easily. For example, this company out of Tennessee has built over 100 of these small office spaces to help businesses save on construction costs.

#9 Apartments Made Of Shipping Containers
Shipping containers can also be used to build apartments. Here is an example of a few apartments in Sweden that were built out of steel shipping containers. These apartments are rented out and designed for long-term living or short-term stays by tourists.

#10 Flexible Spaces
Many of the steel container homes and other buildings are built on a foundation. However, some use a steel subfloor and don’t need a foundation. These units can easily be moved if you want to relocate your home or business.

I am looking for shipping containers to relocate my medical office. I have looked all over the web and every place I have found wants an arm and leg to rent them out, but then they are looking at me having to pay even more money to have them shipped to the site which isn't cheap either. I just need to know if there is anyone out there that has a couple I can purchase from, even if they are not the prettiest things in the world. And, yes, I have already checked with the shipping companies and they want an arm and leg for shipping. Thanks so much.

Hello and thank you for taking time on this. We are looking at using them in an urban renewal project in South Africa's City of Tshwane ( Pretoria ). We are looking for 15m high x2 wide steel containers with doors that open inwards. We can pay a negotiable amount per container . We have looked at them on Craigslist, but there are not many other places to look. If you know of somewhere that we can source these from, then we would like to hear how we could get in touch with you. We would probably need around 80 per project and we will be using them for retail and residential development. Thank you very much for taking time out on this and hope to hear back from you soon.

Thinking about relocating my business away from my home in an urban setting but still with high privacy? You should check into some commercial shipping container homes. Here is a great site that shows some possibilities for making your shop or store something unique and new.

I am going to be purchasing a 20' shipping container this week from a local supplier who gets them from the nearby seaport (1 hr away). I want to use it as a rain water tank with extra height, but it needs to have the same size doors (2) as the container itself, one on top and one on the side. The roof is 45' long x 12' wide. If you have an idea on how I can make the space more livable, that would be great.

I am looking to build a self contained micro farm (i.e. shipping container) out side of my house in the UK, will any of you experts have any suggestions I could follow, for example what feedstock i could use to grow food & which type of irrigation system etc. Reply Delete
Shipping container home are the absolute best thing on earth. All you need is a place for one, some material (wood is good enough), no nails, a bunch of screwdriver's and some drinking water. Once you have done that you don't need anything else, unless you want to add on your own water tank or rainwater harvesting systems.

Conclusion: you need a lot of work, dedication, but you can have a cheap home. Reply Delete

I'm in the process of designing and building my own container home (300 sq ft). It's going to be for living and sleeping only, so it's not going to be huge, but I want it to be as well-designed as possible for the space that I have.
