3 Reasons To Breastfeed Longer

Elizabeth's Breastfeeding Success Story
Elizabeth was worried about how she'd feed her newborn baby. She'd been working during pregnancy and didn't remember how to breastfeed. Luckily, she and her baby both had a breast milk helper who helped her get breastfeeding off to a good start.

A father's take on breastfeeding success stories By Celebrity Babies, 1 day ago
A father's take on breastfeeding success stories I have two boys aged one and two. It means that I have spent more time with my wife than anyone else in the last five years, watching her feed our children. I have seen it all, from the hilarious to the shocking. I have only started to see things from a different perspective in the last year when I sat in on a breastfeeding class for fathers and partners. My wife and I hoped that if she could feed our children whilst we were still relatively young and active then we could take advantage of those moments when we were not quite so busy. We also hoped that our children would grow up to be healthy individuals. I truly believe that if you breastfeed for six months beyond the first six months of your baby's life then you are likely to have a healthier, stronger child. When my wife was pregnant she suffered bouts of sickness and had to take time off work, this meant that she was unable to breastfeed even though she desperately wanted too.

I'm so glad I read "A Silly Baby is an Easy Baby" - by Ina May Gaskin
It really changed my view on breastfeeding! She has a very supportive community on www.InaMayShop.com which I think is just great!

I am a mom of two and I nursed my first child for 16 months. This is one story from my journey.
I love to nurse my children, but breastfeeding was not always easy for me. Coming from a family that didn't believe in breastfeeding, it wasn't all that easy to learn how to breastfeed. With my first baby, I had a lot of trouble latching her on and then getting enough breast milk to feed her properly. It was also hard for me to get her latched on right and stopping her from turning around as she tried to feed, so it was painful for both of us at times. She also had a sleep association with breastfeeding that made it difficult for her to self-soothe to sleep. I was able to learn how to calm and sooth her as she was feeding, but it took a few weeks for me to figure out how.
It seems like every new mother has a different story about breastfeeding. It can be hard because if you can't feed your baby, then what do you do? Healthy people don't like being told they're sick and I think this is why many first time mothers feel shame that they can't breastfeed their babies easily. The truth is, many women have trouble breastfeeding their babies easy the first time around and some never get past the early difficulties. I am one of the lucky ones. I was able to overcome my breastfeeding difficulties with my first baby and learned how to nurse her for 16 months.
Some mothers are much more successful at breastfeeding from the start than others. It's okay if you have a hard time with it, but don't give up until you figure out how to make it work for you and your baby. You may not be able to breastfeed exclusively, but that doesn't mean you can't breastfeed at all.
Our son is now 12 weeks old and he is successfully nursing!
My husband has been absolutely wonderful. I ended up having a c-section so he ended up taking our son in recovery for the first hour of his life. When he got home, he was a different person. He was so excited to hold him and see him and wanted to nurse him right away. He is having a difficult time with the latch since his tongue is not as long as his older brothers, but he has been making it work for now. I am doing a two bottle at night routine which is working out really well for us, since my son seems to be eating less at this age. If you are expecting a baby boy and have been pumping exclusively prior to the birth, you may be able to skip straight to that instead of using the 2-4 month method of bottle feeding until your milk comes in (something that can take up to 6 weeks). My husband is more than willing to give up his evenings and weekends for the next however many months it takes to establish a good nursing relationship with our son. My husband was even in the birthing room with me when our son was born (breastfeeding's "holy grail") and he didn't bat an eye at seeing me totally exposed. I'm so glad I found this forum!
I am very grateful to have had these ladies in my life throughout my journey as a new mother.  Breastfeeding can be very difficult and these wonderful women were able to show me how easy breastfeeding can be when you get a little help from your friends...

Conclusion and Further Reading:
The best way to support breastfeeding success is through a loving, nurturing environment and the ability to breastfeed. That doesn't always mean you have to be able to breastfeed exclusively. When your baby is hungry, he/she will feed regardless of how well you're able to help.
Sometimes you can breastfeed but not very well and that's okay too - just make sure your baby has the best start possible!
When I became a mother I knew I would go through difficulties with breastfeeding. I thought all mothers experienced this type of trouble as they learned how to do it right and believe me when I say that it was definitely not smooth sailing for me.
