How Long Does It Take Your Site To Load on Dial Up?

It can take up to 10 minutes for a web site to load on a dial up connection. The reason is that when your computer sends the request to the web server, it must first communicate with the modem over an analog phone line. This takes time. Then, once you are connected with the server, your computer must again communicate with the modem in order to send and receive data through TCP/IP protocol. It's quite possible that there is no content being transmitted at all during this process because so much of it is done over a digital channel instead of analog phone lines. The modem offers a lot of built in functionality, but it is largely analog in nature and not nearly as fast as a purely digital channel.

Using broadband, there is no wait time for the modem to connect to the server. The analog phone line is replaced with digital data that can be sent directly back and forth between your computer and your broadband service provider. It's possible, for example, to receive emails in a matter of seconds when using broadband connection technology instead of minutes on dial up.

So what does this mean? If you are trying to market your site on AOL or via dial up, you won't really get the results you need. It's much better to focus on broadband marketing and directing people to your site. Doing that is going to give you the best chance at success.
