Getting the Materials
Photo Mugs from US shop : $8.45
You can find porcelain photo mugs with cute sayings or pictures of your children there too. You will be able to tell your story by using pictures you choose.
For this photo mug DIY project, you can print your pictures out on any paper format. We used a 4 by 6 photo paper as our base and  printed out the images we wanted to use for our DIY mug. You can choose the size of mug you want to create on site and then click the large or extra large option when picking a page size.
We bought all our ingredients at a local craft store, but there are online shops that provide better deals. Check out Amazon for example . The full list of items that we bought is: 1 porcelain photo mug (9.5 fl oz.), paint brush, 2 cups of water, Mod Podge Dimensional Magic , seam ripper and tape.
The total cost of these items is $8.45 (including shipping costs).
Step-by-Step Instructions
Start by picking a nice image to use as a background. It can be your kids, your dog or your favorite meme from the Internet. Make sure it is placed in the center and that the picture you choose fit nicely into the 9.5 fl oz porcelain mug you bought.
On a side note: Keep in mind that no matter how good or bad you are at drawing, there is almost always an app for that! Today there are numerous photo editing apps which you can download on smartphones and tablets or on computer if you are connected to Wi-Fi.
Now, take the two cups of water and add enough water into a small bowl to cover up your picture. Let it soak for about 30 minutes.
After 30 minutes, you now have a wet sheet of paper that is ready to be peeled off from the background.
Be very careful not to damage the image as you peel it off. If you are not happy with how this looks, you can always repeat the steps above till you are satisfied with your final product.
Take the rest of the soaking paper and cut out any parts that are not picture related (just like in normal printing).
Now you have a background image ready for use on your DIY mug.
Using your paint brush and Mod Podge Dimensional Magic, start gluing the picture onto the front of your mug in the center. Take care to apply Mod Podge evenly across the whole image to avoid any air bubbles from forming. Do not worry if you are a bit messy with the glue, Mod Podge dries clear so it will most likely look invisible when it is dry.
Allow the image to dry for about 10 minutes.
Step 4: Once your background has dried, you can start adding details to your photo mug. We started to fill in the blank areas with a bit more Mod Podge Dimensional Magic until we were happy with how our mug looked. You can really spend as much time as you want on this step, the more detailed, the better.
Step 5: Now for the personalization. Using a seam ripper or a nail file and some tape, add some text you like from cards or scrap paper onto your mug and make it look more personalized for yourself. Once you are happy with the looks, repeat the process with another layer of Mod Podge to seal in the text.
When the mug is dry, your DIY photo mug is now ready to be used. All that's left to do is have a nice cup of tea or coffee!
