The Role of Accountability in Maintaining Motivation

Ever feel as if you're not progressing towards your goals? You can’t keep up with your schedule or forgo the comfort of old habits. You have plenty of reasons–laziness, hunger, apathy, lack of natural abilities–but what if it was possible to motivate yourself without even realizing you were doing it?

It sounds impossible but accountability is the tool to get what you want and need. Here are four ways accountability helps keep motivated in various aspects of life.

#1 Accountability Is a Form of Motivation
Accountability can be a form motivation because no one wants to let their friends or family down when they say they'll do something.

When you're accountable to others, you're motivated to ensure that you don't let anyone down. You'll take action and do what's necessary to meet your goals.

#2 Accountability Cuts Down on Excuses
Accountability helps eliminate excuses so that you can focus on your goals. When someone else is depending on you, there's no need to find an excuse or avoid something that will help get closer to reaching your goals.

So instead of coming up with a reason for your failure or creating a reason why something didn't work out, accountability helps eliminate excuses and forces you to confront the things that are holding you back from success.

#3 Accountability Is a Source of Motivation
You know how it feels to be accountable for something. You go above and beyond your allocated hours, commit to what you said you were going to do while the deadline is looming closer and closer. Accountability isn't just a way of motivating yourself so that you can do what needs to be done but also provides motivation when you don't even realize it's there.

#4 Accountability Helps Build Confidence
How confident are you? Think about the kind of confidence that allows you to try new things, go after what doesn't matter and take action towards your goals. When you hold yourself accountable, it helps build confidence in yourself.

Accountability forces you to take action and when you go above and beyond your expectations, it makes you feel much more confident about your capabilities.

ACCEPTING RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR LIFE AND YOUR ACTIONS IS A FORM OF ACCOUNTABILITY THAT HAS A DIRECT COST ON YOUR LEVEL OF MOTIVATION. WHEN YOU ACCEPT RESPONSIBLITY FOR WHAT YOU SAY YOU'RE GOING TO DO, IT PROVIDES MOTIVATION TO DO WHAT'S NEEDED TO GIVE YOURSELF THE BEST CHANCE OF SUCCEEDING. IF YOU ACCEPT RESPONSIBILITY FOR WHAT YOU DO, YOU'RE NOT ONLY PROVIDING YOURSELF AN INCENTIVE TO GIVE YOURSELF THE WORST OF CHANCES, BUT IT MAY ALSO BE A WAY OF MOTIVATING OTHER PEOPLE TO DO THINGS THAT AFFECTS THEIR EXPERIENCES.

The Role of Accountability in Maintaining Motivation
By: Tanya Boswell
We could all use a little extra motivation now and then, especially at work when we have so much to do and so little time to get it all done. When we find ourselves lacking motivation at work, it may be helpful for us to remember that our accountability at work is an essential factor in maintaining our motivation. There are many factors that can contribute to working without motivation, but let’s look at some of the key reasons we don’t work hard.

We all have different work styles, and there is one thing that is common among most people – they want to be successful. We want to be recognized for our work. We want to make a positive impact on the world and see our work reflected in the company we work for. We want to know that our efforts are noticed, that it matters enough for us to do our job well so that we can be better employees and valuable members of society as a whole.

Conclusion

Accountability is a major factor in maintaining motivation. It keeps us from straying from the path, and it helps us to do our job better.

Accountability, in this sense, is defined as being held responsible for one's actions or behavior. Accountability does not require that someone be informed of what we are going to do or that we have to explain our actions to someone else, it simply requires that we take responsibility for our choices and actions. Accountability is essentially the act of taking responsibility for your life and choices, which leads to your being accountable for other things that you did not make decisions on your own...
