How To Take Better Kitten Pictures

Cats are usually the stars of our photos, but if your cat is uncooperative and you don’t own a tripod, it can be tricky to take a good photo. The static backgrounds of most Instagram filters don’t make capturing an authentic image easy either.

Thankfully, there are some tools and tricks you can use to make your cat look more lovely than ever! Today we’re going to show you how to take better kitten photos with five simple hacks that will help get that perfect picture every time.

1) Use A Static Background - We recommend sticking to neutral colors like white or gray as they tend to work best for this purpose. These colors let the light from the flash shine behind your cat and highlight him, while minimizing any distractions from other items in the room.

2) Try Using A Piece Of Tin - The most obvious (and least effective) way of taking a good cat picture is simply using a photo where your cat is standing in front of something that isn’t moving. However, this poses a bit of a problem. First of all, most cats are scared of sudden movements, so you have to get their attention before they’ll allow you to take their picture (we tend to enjoy this part). Secondly, as you’ll notice in the above example, there are a lot of ugly tinsned corners and edges showing up behind your cat’s head.

We have a solution that we prefer. Take your typical tin and place some tape over all of the sharp edges so that they are no longer visible (as shown below). Then hold it out in front of your cat with your hands placed strategically so that you will not be in the shot. This will let you take a crisp clear picture without any unsightly distractions.

3) Use A Light To Take A Shadowless Photo - Getting a great photo of your cat is all about being able to get at him without having to worry about other objects in the room. This is why you should always keep any light source away from the back of your cat. We recommend using a flash as it will give you soft balanced lighting that doesn’t include any shadows cast on your cat.

4) Get Them To Stand For The Photo - The obvious solution to taking a picture where your cat isn’t standing still is to get them to stand still for you. To do this, try to get your cat to see something that interests him. This can be a toy, a favorite food or even just an empty box. Once you’ve gotten his attention on something, you can use your hands to gently guide him into a standing position while you take the picture with your smartphone or camera.

5) Take A Video - The above tips are designed for taking static images of your cat, but sometimes you just want a video of them doing something cute. The easiest way to capture this is by using the video function on your smartphone. Be sure to hold your phone still so that the video is as shake-free as possible. Also, make sure that you keep your finger on the “record” button while you’re recording. If you take your finger off of it, the video will stop recording.

These tips will help you take better kitten photos every time. Enjoy practicing with your cat and happy Instagramming!
