Is Someone Stealing Your Home Business Ideas?

Many entrepreneurs think that their unique idea is their own, and they are only too happy to share it with the world. But you should know that there are a few potential red flags when it comes to claiming your idea as your own. Here are a few things you should keep in mind if you suspect someone is stealing your idea.

- If somebody has already been working on a similar venture, and they have an early version of the product or service; then chances are that person came up with the same concept first. It's possible they were inspired by what you've already done or even simply mentioned the fact in passing one time over coffee and had no intention of actually pursuing it themselves until after you had taken action.

- If you suspect someone has used your idea to start their own business, then the first thing you should try is a Google search for something along the lines of "your product or service + name of competitor". If your competitor has been found online before you, then they have probably secured a website or domain name with your company name already on it. However, if you have no record of them online and particularly if they are operating in another area of the country or even another part of the world, then it's likely that someone else got to your idea first. This is because there are billions of ideas out there and many people will come up with similar concepts at a similar time.

- Some people are just plain greedy and may take your idea without any intention of being clever about it. For example, if they know you are currently working on your own unique idea, they may simply contact you and offer to license the rights or even buy it outright from you. In such a case the person in question probably has no intention of bringing their own unique concept to market but rather simply wants to cash in on one that is already progressing. They can make a small or large amount of money simply by buying your idea instead of creating their own. Of course this only works if you have already established yourself as an entrepreneur and posted about your ideas online or perhaps even gone so far as filing for a patent on your intellectual property.

Regardless of how you discover that someone is using your idea, you should take action to secure what rightfully belongs to you. Don't let some unscrupulous person make a quick profit off of your hard work and innovation.
