 Snoring And Its Serious Hazards

The snoring problem is a common family issue that can be quite alarming for many people. Because of this, it's important to understand the serious dangers of snoring and what you can do in order to alleviate the problem.

Snoring is a type of sleep apnea, which is when the tissues in your throat and nose relax during sleep, disrupting your breathing and causing your stomach or chest to vibrate with each breath you take. This noise can sound like an animal growling, or as if someone is sawing wood with a dull blade — it all depends on how loud it gets. The louder your partner's snoring sounds, the more likely they are to have sleep apnea.

Snoring is one of the most common sleep problems in the world and it's also one of the biggest health issues. Depending on where you live, your chances of snoring may be as high as 26 percent compared to as little as 11 percent. That's because snoring isn't limited by areas or demographics, so no matter where you are, there are always people experiencing it.

But even though 19 million adults snore every night, it's only a small percentage who actually suffer from sleep apnea. When your throat muscles relax during sleep and collapse against your airways, it causes you to stop breathing every now and again; this is called "sleep apnea. In severe cases of sleep apnea, you may wake up 20 times or more each hour.

"Sleep apnea is a fairly common disorder and has multiple health risks that can be avoided with proper treatment, maintenance and education," says Jacob Saunders, M.D., a shoulder/back surgeon at Lenox Hill Hospital's Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Center. "Snoring is also a common problem that can be addressed by optimizing the muscles in your throat to prevent future problems." (Check out our article on healthy snoring techniques.)

The good news is that getting rid of snoring isn't as difficult as you think. The most effective way to sleep more soundly and live a healthier life is to breathe more easily through your mouth if you snore. This may sound counterintuitive, but it's an easy fix and a great step toward living a better life.

I wonder if I have apnea. My husband has been telling me I'm snoring loud every night for many years now. He says it sounds like a train is coming through our bedroom every 3 minutes or so. I can't sleep through the night and am always tired. This problem was not there when we first got married. We have been together for 10 years, only married for 4 of those years. Trouble sleeping is a huge issue with my husband as well, he stays up all night talking to me and is unable to sleep also either. I have slept with earplugs in and I wear a comforter on top of the sheet I am sleeping on so as not to get overheated. My husband wears pyjamas but still sleeps with a couple of sweatshirts on top of them because he keeps getting cold at night. He has always been co-sleeping but I beg him to not sleep with me. I have pushed all of the pillows around the bed so he is a little further away from me in case i accidentally try to wake him up and he does not respond. It's hard for my husband to believe that I can't sleep through the night. He says that if it were his head he would wake up every time I snored loudly because it wouldn't be nice, after all if you snore loudly you are going to disturb somebody. He is just trying to get me help and better understand why this is happening and wants us both as healthy as we can be. I have been to the doctor and was fine. Same with dentist. What do you think of my situation?

Inquiry #201: Snoring And Its Serious Hazards   [Click for Answer] Good morning Dr Neil... my wife has a very loud, disruptive snore while sleeping.... infact, I can hear her snore all the way thru my bedroom wall. It sounds like a train is coming through my room while she is sleeping. This problem began after we moved house.... and it's getting worse.... We have tried every mouthpiece, anti-snoring pill on the market... and if we purchase them ahead of time, I take them out. My wife has been diagnosed with sleep apnea, but (and poor doc doesn't understand this) it does not stop the snoring.

Conclusion:

Article Summary: Snoring may be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea. Sleep apnea is a serious problem that affects millions of Americans . It will almost always get worse over time if you do not do something about it.
